So you turned TimeMachine on in the NAS Admin UI, you can see the default TimeMachineBackup share, but when you start backing up to the share it fails. Surprisingly, Apple does not offer an option to use cloud services for Time Machine. But, like most things Mac, where there's a will, there's a way and I was determined to find it. Well, actually, I didn't have to look that hard. If you back up files from that volume using file-based archiving software, hard links are copied each time they appear. (This also makes it difficult to copy a Time Machine backup from one volume. AWS Backup is a fully managed backup service that makes it easy to centralize and automate the backup of data across AWS services. Using AWS Backup, you can centrally configure backup policies and monitor backup activity for AWS resources, such as Amazon EBS volumes, Amazon EC2 instances, Amazon RDS databases, Amazon DynamoDB tables, Amazon EFS file systems, Amazon FSx file.

The new guide gives people information regarding three popular methods of using Time Machine to backup to the cloud: IDrive, Dolly Drive and Transmit.
Backblaze is a pioneer in robust, scalable low cost cloud backup and storage services. Personal online backup to enterprise scale data storage solutions.
The guide explains that IDrive is an online backup company that offers one of the best and most straightforward ways to backup Time Machine. It makes an exact copy of the Time Machine drive and moves it to the cloud. It allows the user to rest assured that the hard drive is backed up in two places. The guide goes on to say that people can order a replacement hard drive which is delivered by mail. In the case of a computer hard drive and Time Machine failure, having a physical hard drive delivered over night cuts down on restore time.
Next up is Dolly Drive. Dolly Drive is a company that has software designed specifically for Apple computers. Within the software, customers can use the 'Cloud Backup' option to backup entire hard drives. It works much like the way Time Machine works for Apple computers except Dolly Drive stores the data in the cloud.
Lastly, the guide brings up Transmit. Traditionally, Transmit is an FTP client, but one of it's new features is the ability to sync local drives with cloud storage. The guide explains that you can purchase Transmit and configure your own cloud storage like Amazon S3 to backup to.
Steven Johnson, site administrator, said, 'We just purchased a new computer at the office and because of the information kept on it, we can't take any chances. We like the way Time Machine works so we simply want the ability to restore our Time Machine from the cloud if we need to. We think IDrive is the easiest solution for this.' At MacWorld Expo 2011 Dolly Drive showed off its new cloud based Time Machine backup system. The service interfaces their online backup storage and Time Machine to backup your Mac OS X system. The service even gives you a bootable version of your drive backup and can backup from anywhere you have an Internet connection.
The backup process is encrypted for security purposes. And restoring it is as simple as using Time Machine's restoration service. The program does not keep you from backing up to an external drive like you would with Time Machine normally. It just backs up to the cloud in addition to an external drive.
The service costs $10/month for 250GB of storage and an additional 5GB/month added for each month that you subscribe. So after three month your storage would grow from 250GB to 265GB. If you don't need that much, there is a 5GB option for $5/month and 100GB for $7.50/month. The extra 5GB/month of subscription is added to the two lower cost options as well.
Dolly Drive is a pretty good deal since by comparison Dropbox offers 50GB of online storage for $10/month or 100GB for $20/month. Although Dropbox does have a free 2GB service. Box.net offers a free version with up to 50GB but for 500GB it costs $15/month. There is an unlimited version of Box.net, but you have to call to set that up and get special pricing. Neither of these interface with Time Machine, but have simple to use clients that install on your Mac or Windows system.
Competing backup solution Mozy works on the Mac for $5 a month with unlimited backup space, but it doesn't connect to TimeMachine like Dolly Drive.
Below is a demo from TUAW.
We will give you a full review of the service in the coming weeks.
